I know it’s a very strange number but there is a reason for it, ‘back in the day’ I used to attend the raves run by Spiral Tribe, SP 23 was, and still is a creative conspiracy of musicians, DJ’s and artists. So from then it’s been MY number.
In 2023, we have seen the highest turnover and best results in the business, and I would say we are at our ‘happiest’ and I am referring to the team and myself.
How do we judge ‘happiness’ in the business?
There are a number of measures we use to judge how happy we all are:
- Staff Turnover:
This year we have seen very low staff turnover, in fact only one person left from the team and we have seen two new join.
- Feedback:
The feedback we receive from our customers, both publicly and personally.

- Relationships
With the ongoing consolidation of business relationships, with suppliers, architects and surveyors, we are seeing repeat business, larger projects and regular work from our insurance partners.
For me, giving back will always be something the business and I do. It’s the greatest feeling when you do something for someone else. So in 2023, we invested in a refresher defibrillator and emergency first aid training so we can provide immediate care on-site, in our community and for our friends and family. We saw this in action on one of our sites recently, where a guest in a hotel we were working in had a heart attack and our team were the first to the scene.
Sam (my wife) and I sponsor a child in Myanmar, his name is Thang Deih Tung, since the coup in February 2021, there has been a brutal nationwide lockdown and children like Thang Deih could still be forced into child labour if not financially supported.
During 2023, I took over as President of our BNI chapter, stretching myself and coming out of my comfort zone, winning this year’s Givers Gain award from our Inspire Chapter and as the year ends supporting the chapter in nominating my replacement.

I have also maintained a solid regime around my health and fitness, winning the Most Challenges won awards in 2023, not bad for 56!
And in 2024, following on from this amazing 23 year, we have some big plans, which I tell you more about in the New Year, but they will include a personal challenge in June as part of a mentoring scheme I am getting involved with, working towards the office going off-grid and further investment in upskilling the team.
